Join us in celebrating the long relationship between T H White and the Bowood Estate by enjoying special offers on admission to Bowood House and Gardens, or
The beautiful Bowood Estate, near Calne in Wiltshire, has enjoyed a business relationship with T H White going back as far as 1937 when the company supplied a horse plough to the then landowner, the 7th Marquess of Lansdowne. Now,
Over the years that T H White has been doing business with Bowood, the estate has seen many changes. Until the 1980s, Bowood Farms covered 3,000 acres, with four dairy herds, a beef unit, as well as corn and potatoes under cultivation. Retired T H White Sales Representative John Burgess particularly recalls supplying two combine harvesters to Bowood.
Today, the present Marquess of Lansdowne has transformed the estate, opening the historic house and gardens to the public. The former Home Farm is now at the centre of Bowood’s Golf & Country Club, the old 18th century farmhouse having been sensitively converted into the Clubhouse, more recently also being adjoined by modern meeting and banqueting facilities. The championship 18-hole golf course is the top course in Wiltshire and is set in Bowood’s 2,000 acre Great Park, originally laid out by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
Through the transition from farming to the Golf & Country Club, T H White has continued to supply machinery to the estate, the entire grass cutting fleet now being composed of Ransomes Jacobsen machines from T H White’s Grasscare Division.
From next May the pleasures of Bowood will become accessible to even more people when a new 43-bedroom hotel and spa opens overlooking the golf links.
Nick Down, Director of T H White’s Motor Division, said “Many T H White staff and customers are already familiar with the delights of Bowood and we hope that the long relationship between the two enterprises will continue to be mutually beneficial. We are delighted to strengthen the link by making a Discovery 3 Commercial available to the Estate, which is already proving to be the ideal vehicle for Ross Williams, the Course Manager at Bowood.”
In turn, Bowood has some terrific money saving offers for White’s World readers who can use the vouchers printed with this article. There’s a two-for-one admission offer to Bowood House and Gardens, worth £8 and valid until 4 November when the house closes for the winter. This magical place is an oasis for all ages; the young will revel in the adventure playground, while parents and grandparents will enjoy the house and hundred-acre gardens, as well as the beauty of Capability Brown’s Great Park.
For golfers there’s a really special offer worth £96, allowing four people to play on the Bowood Championship Golf Course for the price of two, from now until 31 March 2009. Designed by Dave Thomas, architect of the Belfry, the Bowood course rewards good golf and it can accommodate all levels of ability. Yet, from the back tees in events which include the European Challenge Tour Championships, even the greatest professionals can find this stunning course a challenging test of their skills.
